The fake Pentagon explosion image moved markets, and it’s not hard to see it driving even worse reactions. I have been doubting the veracity of photos (and videos) for a long while. The collapse of public trust in what was previously acceptable as evidence... that's a very, very serious development. Many commentators over the last few years have called out an erosive social problem abetted and enabled by the internet -- people living in "silos" of filtered and curated information, so that there is no consensus reality any more. Hard documentary evidence -- like audio recordings, photos and video -- is one of the few ways to establish consensus reality.
