There are a number of reasons why social media algorithms may promote self-harm, including the following:

Viral content: Social media algorithms often prioritize viral or trending content, which means that content that is widely shared or viewed is more likely to be shown to users. In some cases, this can lead to the spread of harmful or dangerous content, such as images or videos related to self-harm.

User behavior: Social media algorithms also take into account a user's past behavior and preferences when deciding what content to show them. This means that if a user has previously engaged with content related to self-harm, the algorithm may show them more of this type of content in the future.

Echo chambers: Social media algorithms can also create echo chambers, where users are shown content that reinforces their existing beliefs and preferences. In some cases, this can lead to users being shown content that is harmful or potentially dangerous, including content related to self-harm, as they may be more likely to engage with this type of content.

haha I mean it “can” China does it all the time. I think transparent regulation to a certain extent makes sense.
