I hope they do something to promote Digital Portability out of traps like iCloud.  In cases such as this, the challenge is not canceling the subscription, but getting your data out which is nearly impossible.  This makes it "easier" —and often necessary—to stay and continue paying for the service, resulting in the same problem of not being able to cancel.

Also, be wary of google docs. I had years worth and backed it up to a hard drive for safekeeping. Then , one day, I decided to get google out of the picture and deleted the google docs on the cloud. Woops. When I went to access the google docs on the hard drive - they are not a true copy - they only reference the cloud., so could not be 'retrieved'. When the cloud ones have gone, the back up simply does not work. I lost years of personal stuff becasue google deletes it all permanently after 30 days, and does not tell you that tlittle fact. I have moved to one drive (and local storage) as the word dos are actual, and does not rely on the cloud

I hope that your photos aren't just on iCloud. iCloud is not a true backup. I recommend using an EHD and/or another photo service like Google Photos, Dropbox, or Amazon Photos (which has the best search functionality and is free with Prime membership). I no longer have to pay Apple for extra photo storage.

This experience (and that of others who I know) is exactly why I don't store anything on anybody's cloud. It is more work to store everything I care about on multiple hard drives but this way I retain control and don't need to worry about security breaches or technical internet screw ups that prevent me from gaining access to my files when I need them. I replace hard drives regularly and transfer files to the new ones. This is a bit labor intensive but it is worth it to me.
